Seasonal recreation

Seasonal recreation

Unfortunately, winter’s finally arrived. From now on, we can look forward to a combination of dark nights, freezing mornings, and a torrent of rain and sleet.

But rather than let the miserable conditions get us down, why not look on the bright side? Yes, it’s cold, but there are plenty of reasons why we should embrace the chilly season with open arms. And here are just a few of them…

Faraway shores

Faraway shores

If the British weather’s starting to get you down, pack a bag and head for sunnier shores. For a weekend break, the likes of Italy, Spain and France are only a few hours away. But if you really want to escape, head for the faraway shores of Thailand or Kenya where you're pretty much guaranteed a suntan.

On the piste

There’s a preconception that skiing’s only for the rich and upper class, but it's actually cheaper than you might think. Many High Street tour operators offer package deals, with flights, accommodation and skiing. And whether you’re a beginner or a pro, winter’s the ideal time to hit the slopes.

While most people can’t wait to jet abroad in summer, sometimes it’s best to wait ‘til winter. If you were to fly to Egypt during August, you could expect unbearably hot temperatures of 45C. However, if you were to wait until November, the heat cools to the low 20s. It’s still warm, but not excessively, meaning you can take in the Pyramids without feeling faint.

Get your skates on

When it comes to winter sports, one of the most popular activities is ice skating. While it’s not advisable to skate on a frozen lake, there are plenty of indoor rinks in the UK. Whether you’re a pro or total novice, grab your skates and hit the ice.

Beat the festive bulge

Christmas is the only time of year when it’s acceptable to wake up, open a bar of chocolate and pour a large glass of wine. But while it’s undoubtedly fun, it’s not good for our waistlines. So start getting into shape early by incorporating regular exercise and sports into your daily routine.

Walking in a winter wonderland

Walking in a winter wonderland

Winter may be cold, but it’s also very beautiful. There’s nothing like an early morning walk to breathe the crisp air and soak up the gleaming, sun-lit frost on the ground. And by taking a daily stroll, not only do you get to see the magical scenery, you also keep fit as you go.

If you’re going to take part in winter sports, it’s important to wear the right gear. For starters, add plenty of layers to trap body heat. Then invest in a woolly hat to insulate your head. And cover your ears completely, which can freeze in the winter. Finish off with thick socks and gloves and you’re ready to go.
