New Year detox

New Year detox

Much like the entire country, you probably over-indulged during the festive period. From mince pies and chocolate to mulled wine and champagne, we could all do with a January detox.

But don’t get lured into expensive treatments and faddy diets. The best results are achieved with a few simple foodstuffs that’ll flush our system and fill us with vitamins. If you’re unsure of what to snack on, here are a few suggestions…

Everything starts with a tea

Everything starts with a tea

Chinese green tea is a pure blend, made solely with the leaves from the Camellia Sinensis plant. Not only is it a tasty alternative to the usual black brew, but it’s healthier, too. Studies have shown that regular drinkers have a lower chance of heart disease and developing certain types of cancer.

This traditional Japanese foodstuff can be added to soup, or used as a marinade for meat and vegetables. Not only does it taste good, but it’s also rich in vitamins and nutrients, too. Amazingly, it also has the power to combat the damage done by tobacco and even fight against breast cancer.

The Popeye diet

The Popeye diet

Popeye’s favourite food isn’t the most popular of vegetables, but it’s great as part of a detox diet. It’s crammed with vitamins and minerals, and can even fight against age-related eye problems. Best of all, it can be used in plenty of different ways. Eat it raw, add it to curries or soups, or pile it onto a healthy salad.

Go nuts for nuts

Go nuts for nuts

Over Christmas, you probably ate a fair amount of Brazil nuts, albeit the chocolate kind. But without the sweet coating, they’re actually crammed with all kinds of healthy goodness. They’re high in omega fats, so they can keep your memory sharp and even make your hair glossy. And they’re also packed with protein, fibre and plenty of vitamin E.

Natural and refreshing

Natural and refreshing

There are plenty of expensive detox treatments on the market, from body wraps and bizarre diets to special teas and wonder pills. But all you really need is water. A couple of pints a day will flush your system of all the festive toxins and keep you looking healthy.

Fresh, tasty and healthy

Fresh, tasty and healthy

After living on a diet of turkey, Quality Street and mince pies, we’re all craving something healthy. And there’s no better snack than fruit. Not only is it tasty and refreshing, but it's packed with vitamin C, fibre, nutritious fluids, and all manner of antioxidants.

This aromatic ingredient may ward off vampires, but it’s an essential human detoxifier. Not only is it good for the blood, but it also has antiviral, antiseptic and antibiotic properties. Eat it raw, or add to a wide range of dishes for a healthy and tasty meal.
