Realistic resolutions

Realistic resolutions

At the star of January, many people make unrealistic goals based upon health and fitness. Most run straight to the gym and sign up for expensive memberships, which are rarely used to their full potential. So instead of making resolutions that you won’t stick to, try and ease yourself into a fitness regime that you’ll enjoy.

Whether it’s walking to work or taking up a sport, you’ll soon be on track for a healthier, fitter 2009. If you’re stuck for ideas, here are some suggestions for a manageable and achievable New Year’s Resolution.

I want to ride my bicycle

I want to ride my bicycle

If you’re serious about getting fit, then ditch the car and invest in a bike. By cycling to work you’ll not only save money, but you’ll be keeping trim at the same time. It may sound like a daring move, but it’s one that’ll have you fighting fit in no time.

Computer fitness

Computer fitness

Not everyone’s a fan of they gym, so many people are turning to the Nintendo Wii for their fitness fix. The revolutionary console has got families up off the couch and into sports like tennis, golf and boxing. And with the Wii Fit programme you can indulge in aerobics, yoga, strength exercises and all manner of fitness training.

Feel the power

Feel the power

The Powerball is the world’s most powerful hand gyroscope and one of the fastest selling sports products in recent years. It may not look like much, but it generates speeds of up to 16,000rpm. Simply pop the ball in your hand and activate the device, which will start to rotate in your hand. The faster you go, the more you increase strength in your wrist and arms. No batteries, no motor, just pure gyroscopic power.

Swim for success

Swim for success

Swimming’s one of the best ways to beat the bulge and keep fit. You’re exercising your entire body with a fast-paced workout, which offers quick, satisfying results. There are plenty of pools around the country, so grab your goggles and dive right in.

Get stuck into sport

Get stuck into sport

Incorporating sport into your life can have a quick effect on your health and fitness levels. The best way is to check out your local sports centre and see what’s on offer. Then devote a couple of nights a week to playing badminton, tennis or five-a-side football.

Home fitness

Home fitness

During January, many people splash out on expensive gym memberships and never actually use them. So it makes sense to save your money and invest in some equipment to use at home. Exercise bikes and rowing machines are great for a quick home workout and can be found for a relatively cheap price.

Walk the line

Walk the line

If you’re looking to shift some of those stubborn festive pounds, it’s time to get walking. By making an effort to travel on foot, you’ll soon notice your fitness levels improving. Take a 20 minute walk each day, or go the whole hog and walk to work instead of driving. And if you want to up the ante, head into the countryside and trek the steep hills.
