History of the Centre

Princess Anne opened The Galleries on July 23, 1974 - a day of great pride and excitement for the entire town, which named the adjoining park in her honour.

More than just a shopping centre, The Galleries was built in four stages. The name, The Galleries, is related to the design of the general shopping area.

The aim of the Galleries was to become a covered, pedestrianised shopping centre linked with other facilities including offices, a health centre, library and sports centre. It was built with heating and underground servicing and ample car parking.

Jimmy Carter, former President of USA, visited the town in May 1977 and he spoke about his love of Washington.

Speaking about his visit, he said; “I will long remember my visit to Washington and the pleasure of meeting so many friends with whom we share a proud heritage.”
